Superior Mesenteric Artery Embolectomy Following Pneumonectomy of Right Bronchogenic Carcinoma Report of a case

Abstract
|
|
|
This is a report of a case of successful embolectomy of embolus in the superior mesenteric artery.
A 56 year old women who received the right pneumonectomy for bronchogenic carcinoma
suddenly complained diffuse abdominal coliky pain 24 hours after the pneumonectomy. 7 hours after
attack of abdominal pain, an emergency labarotomy was undertaken under a diagnosis of acute
abdomen. An embolus with extensive resection of the small intestine was performed with uneventful
recovery and without complication such as short bowel syndrome, postoperatively.
Histpathologically, the embolus was consist of a tissue of anaplastic cell carcinoma, which was
identical to the tumor of the resected right lung.
It was, however, uncertain how the embolus enters into the superior mesenteric artery from the
pulmonary focus.
